Directive 8020

The first instalment of the second season of the Dark Pictures Anthology. Developed for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Created in UE5, Directive 8020 is a cinematic horror game following the crew of the Cassiopeia as they seek a new planet to terraform as the new home for humanity due to the Earth becoming uninhabitable. As they journey to Tau Ceti F, they discover an alien organism that is capable of perfectly mimicking them. As the body count and paranoia rises, and the oxygen in their recycled air drops, the crew navigates their growing mistrust as they seek to escape the nightmare that they hoped to call home.

I joined the team during full production, primarily in a technical capacity as I prepared scenes and features for their final release.

My responsibilities included:

  • Completely overhauling the interaction system using proprietary visual scripting tools and Unreal Sequencer – creating reusable and robust templates for every type of interaction and reimplementing all instances across the project
  • Providing mentoring, documentation and on-the-job training for junior employees to jump right into implementing content
  • Implementation and upkeep of Automated testing across the whole project in conjunction with another technical designer and engineering
  • Writing tutorial dialogue for various mechanics, as well as hints and barks for puzzles
  • Implementation and upkeep of cinematics
  • Animation placements and rough camera block outs
  • General bug fixing and logic passes
